About

The Advisor is a quarterly journal that publishes articles on all topics relevant to advising in the health professions. We seek to publish papers that will help advisors and others in the health professions better serve their students, communities, and institutions. Published articles will present novel approaches to familiar issues, offer opinions and/or historical viewpoints, review common practices from fresh perspectives, highlight new trends, and generally inform. We welcome submissions on any topic that might be of interest to readers.

Categories of Articles

The Advisor publishes a wide range of article types including, but not limited to, the types listed below.

Format, length, and the number of tables/figures are listed as guidance only; articles can be longer/shorter and/or include a greater number of/fewer tables/figures as needed. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Tony Wynne at twynne@naahp.org

  1. Research articles: original research studies, including but not limited to interventional program analyses, surveys, and other observational studies. These are typically 2500-3500 words with 5-6 tables/figures.
  2. Brief reports: similar to research articles but shorter—for example, a pilot study or a case report. These are typically 1000-1500 words with 2-3 figures/tables.
  3. Review articles: articles that provide a current review of topics of interest to advisors that typically focus on a specific question that is relevant to health professions advising. These are typically 3000-5000 words. Table/figures (2-3 typically) may also be included if appropriate.
  4. Spotlights: articles focused on a topic of specific interest to health advisors, including but not limited to less well-known health professions careers or a unique program or approach to a common dilemma. These are typically 1000-2000 words. Table/figures (1-2 typically) may also be included if appropriate.
  5. Perspectives/viewpoints: articles that address an important topic in medicine, public health, health policy, and/or ethics that is specifically relevant for advising in the health professions. These are typically 1000-1500 words and may include figures/tables (1-2 typically) if appropriate.
  6. Book reviews: reviews of books that are of interest to or are relevant to those involved in advising pre-health students. Books can be fiction or non-fiction, recent or a classic—anything that you have enjoyed and/or found useful that you think others might as well. These are typically 1000-1500 words.
  7. Conference reports: articles on information presented at the NAAHP national conference or a regional or local meeting. These are typically 1500-2500 words with 3-6 tables/figures.

Instructions for Authors

General Structure

Use double spacing throughout your article, including text, figure legends, and references; tables should be single-spaced. Symbols, abbreviations, and acronyms should be defined the first time they are used. Use Times New Roman and Symbols font (as needed).

All article submissions should include a title page with the article’s title, authors’ names and affiliations, and contact details for the corresponding author. Research articles, brief reports, reviews, and conference proceedings should include an abstract and 4-6 keywords (on the following page). Other articles (eg, focus on DEI) may include keywords and/or an abstract if applicable.

Tables and Figures

All tables and figures should be called out and cited in the text in numerical order. Authors can embed tables and figures in the text following the paragraph where each is first called out. Titles should be included with each with notes (Tables) and legends (Figures) included as needed.

Tables can be submitted directly in the word document (using the insert table function and using single spacing). Graphs and charts can also be made using Excel or Adobe Illustrator. Please save art, including photographs and other illustrations, at a resolution of 150 to 300 dots per inch (dpi).

References

Authors are asked to use APA style for in-text citations and references: http://www.apastyle.org/index.aspx. References should appear at the end of the article.
